Installation

We at Action Foam & Tools Inc. are frequently asked about the installation and finishing of architectural foam shapes. One of the beauties of using foam is that it is easy to install, and we hope the information and suggestions that follow will be helpful.

It is important to remember that because foam is never used as a structural or load-bearing material, it is not governed by building codes. Therefore, the information provided below does not constitute a specification but is offered solely for the user's consideration and investigation. It is a compilation of information by numerous plastering contractors and wall systems manufacturers, as well as by extensive observation of completed projects where foam shapes have been used. It details the most commonly used method of foam installation and finishing and is a method which has proven to be successful. No warranties, written or implied, are expressed in this information.

Note:
We recommend that mesh be used with all architectural foam shapes and especially in all heavy use areas or areas of potentially high impact. Using mesh greatly improves the physical integrity and durability of the foam.

The foam is attached to the wall (usually the brown coat in exterior use) with an approved adhesive which is applied to the back of the foam with a notched trowel. Adhere the foam to the wall with a sliding motion and allow the adhesive to dry for 24 hours.

After the adhesive is dry, an approved base coat material is troweled, brushed or sprayed directly onto the front face of the foam shape, together with mesh which is to be embedded completely into the base coat. The base coat and mesh together should be approximately 1/8" thick. (The base coat material is generally the same material that is used as an adhesive in step 1, as these materials serve both purposes.)

Allow at least 2" of mesh to extend around the top and bottom edges of the foam shape onto the mounting surface and overlap all vertical joints with mesh. This both strengthens the adhesion and prevents cracking at the joints. (The mesh pattern should not show through and additional base coat may need to be added if it does.

Again allow for a 24 hours drying period. When the base coat is dry, proceed with the final finish coat according to specifications.
